The School of the Osage Indians scored at least one touchdown in every quarter as they defeated Warsaw Friday night 29-14.
Tyler Davis got the Indians on the board first with a 51 yard scameper with 3:21 left in the first quarter. Davis said the touchdown run was a play the team thought they could have success with in the game.
“After watching film, we knew we’d have certain plays (that would work for us), that was one of them,” Davis said.
He added a seven yard run late in the second quarter to give the Indians a halftime lead of 14-0.
Despite the lead head coach Dan Henderson felt the team did not wake up and start playing well until Warsaw opened the second half scoring with a touchdown and two-point conversion.
With the Indians up only six points, Henderson said the team kicked it into another gear. The Indians scored 14 unanswered points in the third quarter to build their lead to 29-8.
Warsaw added a late touchdown but it was too little too late.
Quarterback Kyle Crooks threw for 180 yards and one touchdown. He was happy with the team’s performance.
“We played good both sides of the ball in the first half,” Crooks said. “We let them back in in the second.”
While Crooks was happy with the win, Henderson thought the team did not play as well as it had in past weeks, and said a lot of that was credited to Warsaw’s play.
“I give a lot of credit to Warsaw. They did a nice job of keeping the ball out of our hands, I never felt really comfortable,” Henderson said.
Henderson said the team was not as sharp as it needs to be, but said that he’ll take the win and move forward.
Tyler Vincent had nine catches for 99 yards while Tyler Davis had 86 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 13 carrie, and also added 37 yards and one touchdown receiving.
Steven McDaniel received a lot of carries late in the game on draw plays. He finished the game with 50 yards rushing and one score. Henderson Warsaw had trouble handling the receivers and backs on the edges, which opened up holes in the middle late in the game for Henderson.
Osage will travel to California next week for its first district game. Despite their four game winning streak Henderson said the Indians still have a few kinks to work out.
“We want to play well. We do some things pretty well, and there are some things we can improve and fine tune,” Henderson said.
