Missing lakefront mile-marker signs are going to be replaced through a collaboration between the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 30-05 and the Laurie Elks Lodge No. 2705. Many of the signs the groups erected in 2004 have been knocked down by careless construction crews or otherwise simply disappeared from sight on the lake.
They were originally put up to help as a navigational aid for those unfamilair with the lake. But they also serve aanother valuable purpose: The mile-marker signs help boaters in distress to pinpoint their location quickly for assistance.
The signs are 24 inches wide by 30 inches tall, highly reflective with white numbers. The name of the branch of the lake is noted at the bottom of each sign.
Donations paid for the first round of signs, which run orange on your left and green on your right going towards Bagnell Dam.
The signs cost approximately $55, and the two service organizations are soliciting help to pay for them.
Donations for the mile-marker program can be made to the: Elks Lodge No. 2705 Mile Marker Fund, P.O.Box 1262, Laurie, Mo.
