All across the state, fire safety awareness is being raised during Fire Prevention Week. The focus of this year’s campaign is preventing the leading causes of home fires – cooking, faulty heating and electrical equipment and smoking.
The numbers are daunting: More than 2,500 people died in fires across the U.S. in 2006 and 12,500 people were injured in the 396,000 reported home fires. Sadly, many of these fires were preventable.
Fire professionals and educators will be prominent in the news this week, school kids will bring home materials and there may even be a fire drill reported to parents.
This is an excellent time to review home safety and escape plans with your family. You can find a home safety checklist at www.nfpa.org.
You should also take the fire safety quiz at the same Web site.
