For the first time in nearly 18 years, the lake’s largest fire protection district has appointed a deputy chief.
Mid-County Fire Protection District Chief Scott Frandsen said since taking over there have been a number of changes. Appointing someone to be second in command is just one of them.
Gary Woodson was approved by the fire district board to fill the volunteer position last month. He has a full-time job as the emergency services coordinator for the city of Osage Beach.
Frandsen said he felt it was necessary to have someone to step in when he is not available.
Woodson has more than 20 years of experience in fire service and is a good fit for the district, Frandsen said. The district is looking at improving joint training programs with neighboring agencies and as well as within the department.
Woodson will help in the areas of public relations, training and management.
Woodson said he will step in during his spare time on evenings and weekends.
He feels his full-time job with the city and the volunteer position will blend well.
“It keeps me involved in the emergency services in Camden County which Osage Beach is a part of,” he said.
Woodson was the Lake Ozark Fire Protection District chief from June 2003 until March 2008 when he took the job with Osage Beach.
He also has experience with the Jefferson City Fire Department, Moreau Fire Protection District and was the deputy chief for the training and certification unit in the state fire marshal’s office.
“I started out as a volunteer firefighter many years ago,” Woodson said. “I love the fire service, it’s been in my blood for a long time.”
