Sawdust will fly, engines will roar, grown men and women will fall in the lake and visitors can watch the entire spectacle for free.
The Tall Timbers Lumberjack Show hits the Lake of the Ozarks Saturday at Dog Days Bar and Grill, which will host the first sporting event of its kind in the area.
Dog Days owner Mark Barrett decided to host a lumberjack challenge at the lakeside restaurant on the Glaize Arm after watching the world championships in Wisconsin.
“I just wanted to have family friendly events, something along the lines of outdoor entertainment,” Barrett said.
The lumberjack competition features classic events like axe throwing, the underhand chop and the double buck crosscut saw race where competitors work in pairs to see which team can saw through a log in the shortest time. The Tall Timbers crew will also place a 1,800-pound log in the water at Dog Days for the log rolling competition. The three free shows will take place at 1 p.m., 5 p.m., and 7:30 p.m.
“Two men get on the log and one tries to knock off the other without touching him; it's how you control the log and try to throw the other man off,” said Ed Hence, Tall Timbers production director of the contest that leaves losers and occasionally winners sopping wet.
Approximately half of the competitors in timber sports come from the ranks of professional lumberjacks. The rest are recruited to the sport based on their abilities and train specifically for the competitions seen on ESPN and VERSUS.
The professional lumberjacks with Tall Timbers come from small communities all over Midwestern states including Missouri, Nebraska, Michigan and Wisconsin. One lumberjack hails from the Dominican Republic.
The games are not just for men. Several "lumberjills" will compete at Dog Days in a show that promises family entertainment.
“We bring a lot more color and interest into the performance,” Hence said. “We'll get the audience involved as much as they want to be involved, and sometimes if they don't want to be involved, we will go ahead and get them involved.”
The lumberjacks and lumberjills keep the audience engaged with plenty of humor and “chainsaw comedy” under the watchful eye of M.C. Mike Nichols, who took part in the Moe Bandy show in Branson for the past six years. Hence said the crowd in Osage Beach can expect to see the best that Tall Timbers has to offer in the way of competitors.
“They're fighting for spots right now, they're all really excited,” Hence said.
The show isn't old-timey humor with traditional axes and saws. The hot saw competition offers a captivating blend of man, machine, and danger – a no-holds-barred approach to cutting a log with a chainsaw.
“That's where you use a modified saw; they all have expansion mufflers and headwork done to them, you modify the chains and brakes,” Hence said of one of the modern events in timber sports that will be on display for the first time at Lake of the Ozarks.
Barrett says the crew at Dog Days also plans to host the professional lumberjacks during Lake of the Ozarks Bike Fest on Saturday, Sept. 13.
“Next year, we're planning to host the amateur national championship,” Barrett said with an eye on the future and a desire to promote, “something different than the same old thing every Saturday.”
